The base board isn't our design. It was an engineering enhancement to an existing design that I paid for and I had to get a minimum order. Driving the display from the pi would not work well. Apparently that causes throughput issues and it cannot drive the display at refresh rates that can be used for moving/animated instruments or video so we still need to use the HDMI connector.

We can get the next round of displays engineered further, but again minimum orders and NRE. I still am not close to recouping the costs incurred on the current boards so there would need to be a lot of sales.

Okay, that all makes sense. I have one of the 7" OEM Raspberry Pi displays, that's what I initially set the PyEfis up on before yours arrived. I didn't see any issues with display speed, but I didn't try it in flight nor do I have any engine instruments connected. I thought the display connector was just a different way to connect the HDMI bus but I guess that's not the case.

I thought you may be getting the displays and boards separately and assembling yourself... If the display manufacturer is doing it I understand the need for volume sales before engineering changes are made. :)

I haven't made any provision for buttons yet. I'd like to do that, there is room on the lower bezel to put buttons and knobs. I'll have to find something small, but I could make that side a *little* wider if needed. I'd like to keep it as compact as possible though. This case is 5-3/8" x 3-3/4", and the portion in front of the panel will be 7/16" thick.
I want to print your case by my 3d printer. Are you able to convert your file to one of stl, 3w, obj, ply, amf, 3mf, nkg, stp, igs, gcode which XYZprint can read?

Thank you John for the STL files of the case. It works fine.

I think a better solution would be to mount a 35x35x10, for increased diameter and reduced thickness, but I didn't have one handy. Added to my Digikey ordering wishlist, when I get it to the free shipping threshold i'll order one... :)

Fan is wired directly to the bare pads next to the (occupied) Raspberry Pi header(*). It would be great if this header was populated with a pin header like on the Pi. It would allow for a lot of expansion options, even direct connection for GPIOs.

(* an astute reader would notice that the 5Vdc fan wiring carefully avoids the clearly marked 5V pads. This is a common trick used to reduce fan noise on permanently-connected Raspberry Pi fans, by connecting a 5Vdc fan to the 3.3Vdc terminals instead...It turns at a lower, quieter RPM)
Volros fan(30x30x7) fits well.
