Spammers and Registering for an Account on the Forum!

Post by John Nicol »

Well looks like we have been found by the spambots, so unfortunately we are going to have to implement a manual registration approval. We are getting spammed every few minutes.

So if you would like access to this forum to post, I will have to manually approve your registration. You will first register on the forum with your details.

Send an email to contact at makerplane dot org with the email or username that you used when signing up to get approved.

Please use a real name or recognizable handle, not any random combination of letters. You will most likely NOT be approved if you do! Registering from an aol account will not work as this is one of the main throw-away spam email accounts that are used. Turn-around should be quick for approvals, but give it a max of 24 hours just in case.

You can also follow up using the "Contact Us" form on the main makerplane.org website if there is a delay and you think that we have forgotten you!

Just an update that I deleted over 25,000 spam accounts yesterday. I am getting on average a dozen registrations or more a day from spambots. I have done some research on phpBB security for registration and there doesn't appear to be any good ways to handle it without some form of monitoring, which I don't really have time for so we will need to stick with manual registration for now. It will turn people away I know because we live in an environment where we expect to have milisecond turn-around for registration and posting. If anyone has any experience or ideas on how to mitigate this, please send me an email contact at makerplane dot org. Cheers.
